St Ambrose Players was originally known as St Ambrose Amateur Dramatic Society performing in what was the Salvation Army Hall in Eden Street, Leyland. One of the main reasons for forming was to raise money for the building of the St Ambrose Church Hall.

The first production produced in the Hall under the new name of the society was in 1944 – ‘Gaslight’. This was followed by many plays until 1957 when the society decided to move into the musical field as well. Their first attempt was ‘HMS Pinafore’ followed by other musical operas by Gilbert & Sullivan.
